Aries Galaxy Card

I really do love it when my teenage daughter requests custom cards for her friends. It tells me not only that she likes my artwork but also that she deems it cool enough to share with her peers. In the latest instance, she asked me to make a birthday card for her best friend. She wanted to know if I could make it a galaxy one like my eclipse ATC and could I put the Aries constellation on it. I showed her another galaxy card that I had created for Queen of the Crop retreat Make'n Take and it was along the lines of what she wanted.

I used Canson XL 140 lb watercolour paper and lightly drew the constellation and Aries word with a yellow pencil first. Then, I used a fine brush and covered the pencil lines with masking fluid. Next, I used my Kuretake Gansai Tambi paints using a wet on wet technique to paint the galaxy. Once dry, I rubbed off the masking fluid and matted it on black cardstock. I am happy to say that my daughter was thrilled with the results.

This is my colouring for Day 30 of the 30 Day Coloring Challenge and I am entering this card in this week's Simon Says Stamp Anything Goes Wednesday Challenge.

Beautiful Butterflies

Magenta is a prize sponsor for More Than Words March Challenge.
This month, the word inspiration is "Beautiful" and the creative challenge is "Butterflies".

Supplies: 400 Series cold pressed watercolour paper (Strathmore), Azalea, Butterfly, Leaves of Joy, Script & Post and Life is Beautiful stamps and Purple and Grey Nuance powders (Magenta), Jet Black Archival Ink, VersaMark Ink (Tsukineko), Silver embossing powder (Emerald Creek), coffee filters (Loblaw NoName), Vellum (Dollarama), labeller (Brother)

I started with 140 lb coldpress watercolour paper and heat embossed the Script and Postmark stamped areas with silver. Next, I wet the area that I wished to colour and then watercolour painted with the Purple Nuance. Once dry, I stamped the Leaves of Joy stamp in 3 areas using Black Archival ink and splattered some of the remaining Purple Nuance onto the layout. While that was drying, I stamped the Azalea image with the Archival ink and then watercoloured painted the flowers again using the Purple Nuance. While that was drying, I heat embossed stamped the Butterflies onto coffee filter paper using silver glitter emboss and then watercoloured one with the Grey Nuance powder. Once the flowers and butterflies were dry, I fussy cut them all out. I heat embossed stamped the Life is Beautiful sentiment on vellum using black embossing powder and edged it in black ink. With all the pieces ready, I assembled the layout.

I really like the monochromatic look of this one. Be sure to check out all the inspirational creations over at More Than Words.

Splatter Anyone?

Today is the second part of the Design Team reveal over on the Emerald Creek Dares challenge blog for the Splatter Some Fun challenge and I am sharing my splattered Inspire canvas.

I really do like using splatter on my creations so this was an easy one for me to incorporate.  There is something very freeing about splattering. You have to let go and let it be. Not to mention that it is fun... well for me anyway. Having taught splattering techniques at various workshop classes, I know that it is a source of stress for some. The trick is to be relaxed and loose of hand and start with less cause you can always add more.

I started with a piece of Wild Whisper Designs mint chevron patterned paper and a Vaseline resist technique. I applied some lines of petroleum jelly prior to painting it with Black Dina Wakley Heavy Body Acrylic paint. Once it was dry, I rubbed it with a piece of paper towel and it removes the jelly and jellied paint allowing the patterned paper to show through. Next, I slightly heated it with an embossing gun to dissolve the jelly residue into the paper. Then, I ran and anti static (I use cornstarch in a cheesecloth wrap) over the piece. I stamped with the Kimilese script stamp using emboss ink and embossing it with Soft Fallen Snow embossing powderThis gives a nice effect against the black.

Up next came the splatter fun. After once again running an anti static over the piece, I spritzed water into my hand and then flicked it across the background paper. Next, I covered the paper with St. Paddy's Day Sparkle embossing powder and poured it off. The water droplets hold the emboss powder just long enough to heat set it with an embossing gun. Be careful to keep the heat tool moving and not overheat and scorch the acrylic paint. Once cooled off, I repeated the water spritz emboss technique with Lavender Sparkle embossing powder. Then, I dabbed emboss ink over a thin strip of cheesecloth and embossed it also with Lavender Sparkle emboss powder. Once it was cool, I cut it into two pieces and adhered them to the background piece. While it was drying I moved onto prepping the base.

The base is an upcycled piece of corrugated packing wrap that I gessoed. I splattered Lavender Sparkle embossing on this one using a small fan brush and dipped it into the Emboss It container. Since it is a thicker almost gel like liquid, I placed the loaded brush on my craft mat and spritzed it with a bit of water. I mixed the Emboss It with the water so that it was thin enough to achieve some splatter. I splattered the general area of where the black background piece would end on the opposite corners and then sprinkled and heat set the Lavender Sparkle emboss powder.

Once those pieces were all finished it was time to assemble the canvas. I adhered some cheese cloth that I had coloured with Cottage Ivy green and Teal Zeal blue Momento inks to coordinate with the patterned paper and emboss colours onto the base piece. Next, I glued down the patterned paper background piece and then the two old brushes. Taking some Tim Holtz white paper string, I wrapped it around my hand to shape it and adhered it to the brushes as the focal point and background to the canvas title.

I went with Inspire as my canvas title because not only does it make me happy to create art, it also makes me happy to share my art and inspire others. I recoloured, what was originally a baby blue metal dollar store find, by dabbing it with Emboss It and then heat embossed it with Hammered Metal emboss powder. Once it had cooled, I masked off the top half of the letters and then covered the bottom half again with Emboss It and then heat embossed the bottom portion with Hanukkah Embossing powder. Love the effect and how it now coordinates with the bottom colour of the rushes.

The last part was to add the Vintage Feather Charm and I did that with an upcycled piece of sock clipping metal (you know the small metal pieces that hold the end of a brand new pair of socks together).

Supplies: Kimilese Script Stamp, Vintage Feather Charm, and Lavender Sparkle, St. Paddy's Day, Soft Fallen Snow, Hammered Metal and Hanukkah Embossing Powders (Emerald Creek Craft Supplies), patterned paper (Wild Whisper Designs), black Dina Wakley Acrylic Paint and Emboss It ink (Ranger), gesso (Liquitex), Teal Zeal and Cottage Ivy Momento Inks (Tsukineko), white Tim Holtz paper string (Advantus), metal sentiment (Dollarama), cheesecloth, corrugated cardboard wrap, and paint brushes (Misc.)

Hugs Card

This card makes me smile and feel all warm and fuzzy as I am really pleased with my watercolour painting progress.

Supplies: XL 140 lb cold press watercolour paper (Canson), Gansai Tambi watercolour paints (Kuretake), Studio G shaped card (Hampton Art), black cardstock (Bazzill), Painted Hugs die and Assorted Moonshine sequins (Simon Says Stamp)

I broke out my Gansai Tambi watercolours and painted some expressive floral roses and leaves for Day 14 of Kathy Racoosin's 30 Days of ColouringOnce I was done that, I decided to fussy cut them out and create a card with few of the pieces.

The card came together quickly after that point. I splattered some green watercolour paint onto the cute scalloped Studio G cardbase. Once dry, I arranged the roses and leaves and adhered them in layers and added added foam squares for dimension on the smaller rose and a couple of leaves. Next, I added the Hugs sentiment which I die cut with the Simon Says Stamp Painted Hugs die. Lastly, I adhered the smallest sequins from the Simon Says Stamp Assorted Moonshine sequins. Et violà, a hand made flower card!

I am entering this card into the Simon Says Stamp Monday Handmade Flowers Challenge, the Flower Challenge #6, and the Simon Says Stamp Flickr Challenge #66.

Day 13 - The 30 Day Colouring Challenge

Day 13 of Kathy Racoosin's 30 Days of Colouring had me watercolouring with Magenta Nuance Powders to create a card for a dear friend. She is very much in my thoughts and I know she will appreciate it.

Supplies: 90 lb cold press Montval watercolour paper (Canson), Hot Pink and Grass Green Nuance powders and sentiment stamp (Magenta), mask (MarieLune designs), Gold Glitz Delicata ink (Tsukineko), clear fine emboss powder, Stitched Rectangle die and Assorted Moonshine Sequins (Simon Says Stamp), graphite All pencil (Stabilo), border punch (Fiskars), green cardstock (misc.)

I used a mask like a stamp and transferred the Nuance coloured image onto watercolour paper. Next, I used the largest Stitched Rectangle die from Simon Says Stamp to cut out it. Then, I stamped the Magenta sentiment with Gold Glitz Delicata and heat embossed it with fine clear emboss powder. I used a graphite Stabilo All pencil to give some shadowing of the sentiment to make it show up a bit better against the leaves. Next, I adhered the panel to a border punched green cardstock base. Lastly, I added a spattering of my favourite Simon Says Stamp's Assorted Moonshine Sequins to finish it off.

I am entering this card into the Flower Challenge # 6, Simon Says Stamp Wednesday For a Special Lady Challenge and Simon Says Stamp's Flickr Challenge #66 Get Coloring (in honour of Kathy's Challenge).
