Explore - Mixed Media ICAD

Today's creation has me keeping up my participation in Daisy Yellow's ICAD 2019 and World Watercolor Month by incorporating both in it. This 4 x 6" mixed media ICAD was inspired by the Our Mixed Media Moods June moodboard and Creative Embellishments July Color Challenge with a Twist - Clouds or Waves (I went with waves). I included the graphics at the end of the post.

I went with a fairly literal interpretation of the inspiration boards choosing elements directly from the images. My colour medium of choice for this project was Dina Wakley Scribble Sticks and Heavy Body Acrylic paint.

I chose a piece of Studio Light Denim Saturdays pattern paper just for this project as it went with the grey boards from the centre bottom of the moodboard. It reminds me of an aged cedar dock. I cut it to the 4x6" size and adhered it to the index card with Multi Medium Matte and then did a layer of the gel on the front also. Once it was dry, I covered the card with clear gesso, creating a texture with a brush to start the look of waves. Once dry, I then took a piece of white oil pastel and drew on waves. Next, I scribbled the Dina Wakley Scrbble sticks onto the craft mat and then used the water brush to blend and paint with the colours. Once I had the base colour, I then used a smooshing technique by picking up colour of the mat with the index card. This gives a splashy motled effect. After it was dry, I buffed directly over and following the the pastel lines to bring back the whiteness and contrast of the wave lines. I darkened the edges first with Night acrylic paint but found it was a tad on the purple side against the wave's colour so added Marine to bring up the blue tone.

Next, I turned my attention to the cardboard piece. The base of this was pre-made while I was making my Live Gently Upon This Earth ATC (You can see it here). Thus, the cardboard already had the dictionary page adhered to it and it was covered with gesso and left over Clear Rock Candy Crackle paint. I just needed to give it colour which I did using the Marine Scribble Stick and a waterbrush. While it was drying, I used my finger to add some Texture Paste to the Creative Embellishments Nautical Compass chipboard and then sponged on the Night acrylic paint to it and the N. I chose solely the N as Canada is the north, cottaging is north, and north is where I most spend time by a lake. Once they were dry, I adhered them to the cardboard piece.

Next, I created the the blueberries. Blueberries grow along the rocky shore areas at the cottage in Muskoka so I went with a handrawn watercoloured sprig of them. I have to say that I am quite proud of myself for how the sprig turned out. I watercolour layered the leaves starting with a wash of Evergreen, giving them a blueish colour with Marine and Night, and then darking them with Brown. The branches went through the same layering but I included the addition of Black as the final layer. The berries were painted with two layers of Marine and once I was happy with each one, I added a tich of black to darken the released spent flower area. Once they were dry, I fussy cut them. Then, I was ready to assemble the project.

To assemble the piece, I wrapped the cardboard with navy wire (for the bottom right image on the OMMM moodboard) and then used gel medium to adhere it off centre, more to the left, on the index card base. Then, I tucked in the blueberry sprig and glued it with with the gel. Next, I stamped the CTMH Explore (from their Adventure stamp set) onto a piece of transparency with Black StazOn ink. After trimming it down, I tried it out on the cardboard but it was getting lost as that area was rather dark so I backed it with a small piece of gessoed and Marine coloured dictionary paper prior to adhering it to the cardboard.

I included some detailed close ups of the top and bottom sections.

With this one, you can better see the crackle paste on the dictionary text areas as well as the texture on the compass rose.

With this one, you can better see the splattery splotches of colour on the index card background, the wire, and the Explore transparency.

Here's a last look at the entire finished ICAD.

Supplies: index card and transparency (Staples), patterned paper (StudioLight), Marine, Night, Evergreen, Brown and Black Dina Wakley Scribble Sticks, Night and Marine Dina Wakley Acrylic Paint, Multi Medium Matte gel, Tim Holtz Clear Rock Candy Crackle Paint, Texture Paste (Ranger), Nautical Compass chipboard (Creative Embellishments), clear and white gesso (Liquitex), XL watercolour paper (Canson), Explore stamp (CTMH), Black StazOn (Tsukineko), white oil pastel and wire (Dollarama), cardboard and dictionary page (misc.)

I hope I have inspired you to give one of the many different techniques that I used a try. As mentioned at the top of the post, here are the mood board and color board that were my inspiration for this project. Art is Your Story

The Our Mixed Media Moods December mood board sparks so many ideas for me. I love the neutrals with a pop of red.

For this take, I was inspired by the polka dot feather (as I had found one in my backyard this summer and had saved it), the water bottle frame as I set up my index card with the red on the bottom and then lines with black and white as well as the tanny-browns of the background.

As I wanted to use something new in order to participate in Dina Wakley Media Tribe's January challenge, I used my newly purchased Dina Wakley Collage Paper and Collage Words for the first time. I used two of the tissue patterns for the base background and covered them with gesso to push them back. Next, I added colour with a Dina Wakley Umber Scribble Stick and Ruby Heavy Body Acrylic paint. I drew the ink crock and cut it out of cardstock which I covered with Ranger Texture Paste and coloured with Stabilo All pencils in brown and black. Then, I glued the cut out Collage Words onto cardstock, edged it and then matted it with meshed medical tape.

The finishing touch was to add some Black acrylic paint to the tip of the feather before adhering it as well as a drip into the ink crock. A little edging and I called it done.

Supplies: Vision 140 lb watercolour paper (Strathmore), Dina Wakley Collage Paper, Collage Words, Ruby and Black Heavy Body Arcylic paint, Umber Scribble Stick, gel medium (Ranger), Texture Paste and Jet Archival ink (Ranger), gesso (Liquitex), Black and Brown All pencils (Stabilo), medical tape (Misc.)

Looking forward to another creafting session for another take on this inspiring moodboard.

Delightful - Moodiversary

I'm on a roll! Made another mixed media creation inspired by the Our Mixed Media Moods Moodiversary Mood Board.  I cut a 3x5 piece from my upcycled paper Teriyaki Experience's take out container and used the fuchsia, turquoise, lime, and yellow colours plus the flowers (row 3, column 4) for inspiration.

Supplies: Teriyaki Experience paper to-go packaging, clear gesso (Liquitex ), wht. gesso (Golden), Flower Duo mask and Flower Duo stencil (Magenta), Dina Wakley Magenta, Lemon, Turquoise, Lime and White Scribble Sticks, Dina Wakley Fuschia Heavy Body Acrylic paints,  Graphite All pencil (Stabilo), modeling paste (Pebeo), Tim Holtz Big Chat sticker (Advantus), cheese cloth (misc.)

Little Things ATC - Moodiversary

Made a second ATC inspired from the Our Mixed Media Moods Moodiversary Mood BoardI used another piece from my upcycled paper based Teriyaki Experience's take out container. Drawing from the moodboard, I used the Turquoise and Yellow colour inspiration that went along with the bottom right photo inspiration (4th row, 6th column).

Supplies: Teriyaki Experience paper to-go packaging, gesso (Liquitex & Golden), Branches stencil from the Seasons Trio  (Magenta), Dina Wakley Ocean and Lemon Heavy Body Acrylic paints, Dina Wakley Umber and Lemon Scribble Sticks, Graphite and Black All pencils (Stabilo), Texture Paste(Ranger), Tim Holtz Clippings sticker (Advantus), dried baby wipe (misc.)

I started with a light coat of Liquitex gesso that I removed most of so that the packaging text would still show through. Next, I scraped on some Golden gesso which has a thicker consistency. Then, I applied some watered down Dina Wakley Ocean paint with both a paint spatula and my finger. Using the Branches stencil from the Magenta Seasons Trio stencils, I smoothed on texture paste and then, set it aside to dry.  While it was drying, I added more colour to a paint used baby wipe by adding watered down Lemon acrylic paint and then when dry, adding some more colour with a Lemon Scribble Stick. Next, I went back to the dried texture paste branches and bird and coloured them with an Umber Scribble Stick; adding shadows and depth with both Graphite and Black Stabilo All pencils. Once, I was pleased with my shading, I cut up small pieces of the dried used baby wipe to fashion flowers like in the inspiration photo. They sort of resemble forsythias. Lastly, I added a little Tim Holtz Clippings sticker to finish it off.

Moodiversary Sing ATC

Continuing with inspiration from the Our Mixed Media Moods Moodiversary Mood BoardI used another piece from my upcycled paper based Teriyaki Experience's take out container. This one I cut for an ATC and used both colour inspiration (Melon, Fuschia, and Green) as well as the flowers photo (3rd row, 5th column).

Supplies: Teriyaki Experience paper to-go packaging, clear gesso (Liquitex), wht gesso (Golden), Small Field of Flowers mask (Magenta), Dina Wakley Lime and Blushing Heavy Body Acrylic paints, Dina Wakley Magenta, Umber and Tangerine Scribble Sticks, Dina Wakley Scribbly Small Birdies stamp(Ranger), XL watercolour paper (Canson), Tim Holtz Alpha stickers (Advantus), twine, decorative grass (misc.)

I started with a clear gesso base so that the packaging text would still show through the mix of Dina Wakley Blushing paint mixed with some Scribble Stick Magenta, once I texture pasted with a Magenta small Field of Flowers mask. I painted the texture paste area with Lime and added little touches of gesso. The flowers were given more detail with a black Stabilo All pencil and lots of water. The little Dina Scribbly Small bird was stamped using an Umber Scribble Stick and spritzed water on watercolour paper and then coloured with a titch of Umber and Tangerine. Some twine, decorative grass, and Tim Holtz alpha letter stickers finished it off. This little birdie is ready to sing for some lucky recipient somewhere in the world.

TTFN,

Tweet, tweet - Our Mixed Media Moodiversary

Have you seen the Our Mixed Media Moods Moodiversary Mood Board? It is awesome and chock full of cool inspiration photos and colours. I have been totally sucked in watching both DeeDee Catron's and Jenn Engle's creative process videos on their YouTube channels based on the mood board and they got me itching to play along.

Supplies: Teriyaki Experience paper to-go packaging, gesso (Liquitex and Golden), Whipped Spackle (Faber-Castell Design Memory Craft), Petal Trio and Spring Blooms stamps (Magenta), Dina Wakley Ocean, Lime and Blushing Heavy Body Acrylic paints, Dina Wakley Scribbly Birds stamps, Jet Black Archival ink (Ranger), stamped bird on patterned paper and medical tape (misc.)

I decided to start by upcycling a paper based Teriyaki Experience's take out container that I wiped clean and cut it into a variety of sizes for bases. I loved the kraft colour and Japanese text and while I was eating my delicious meal, thought that it would make a cool background starting point for a variety of creations. My first project, made from it, is this 4 x 6 piece inspired by the Melon, Turquoise, and Green colours of the moodiversary board.

I started by scraping on some gesso and then stamping into Whipped Spackle paste with a Magenta Petal Trio flower stamp from the latest collection (I hadn't done spackle stamp embossing for a while and I was totally inspired by one of DeeDee's videos). Then, I used Dina Wakley Heavy Body Acrylic paints to add colour. I used Ocean to colour the flowers and the top corner as well as some splatters. I used Lime with bubble wrap to stamp three areas as well as added some to the medical tape that I adhered to the bottom section.

Next, I used Jet Black Archival ink with the Magenta Spring Blooms silhouette stamp and then added some swipes of Blushing paint to match the fussy cut melon coloured stamped bird which I received from fellow Get Messian Art Journaler, Sarah Rondon, from a swap that we both participated in. Then, I added the Dina Tweet, Tweets which I stamped onto cardstock and cut out. Lastly, a few finger swipes of gesso and I called it done.
