Secrets of the Sea - November Bleeding Art Challenge

Hi Crafty Friends! Today starts a new challenge month at the Bleeding Art Challenge Blog. As always it is an Anything Goes mixed media challenge. My Design Team inspiration creation for this month is a steampunk inspired artist trading coin entitled Secrets of the Sea.

That old adage something old is new again totally applies to the media used for this creation. I went into my stash and used old Tim Holtz Emboss Powders that are matte with crystals that you scrap off to give it a distressed weathered look. I used the Vintage Photo and Brushed Corduroy ones on the Creative Embellishments Steampunk Artist Trading Coins chipboard piece. I added some Seth Apter Baked Textures Patina Oxides embossing powder to in a few areas to give it an oxidized look for interest and dimension. Next, I adhered it a piece of Stamperia Mechanical Sea patterned paper. Once dry, I cut it out, sanded the sides and darkened them with a dark brown Sharpie Marker. After I fussy cut coral from the patterned paper, I added shell bits and the coral. Lastly, I adhered the Secrets metal chain band.

Bleeding Art July Challenge - Fleur

Hi crafty friends! Today starts a new challenge month at the Bleeding Art Challenge Blog. As always it is an Anything Goes mixed media challenge. My Design Team inspiration creation for this month is a home decor canvas. I have a love of vintage things and even better if they are French inspired. This piece checks both boxes.

The background canvas was created with a layered resist technique using micro glaze and fluid acrylic paint. I started by covering the canvas with vintage collage medium. Next, I stenciled micro glaze through the Harlequin stencil and then sponged the whole canvas with slightly watered-down Emerald Fluid Acrylic. Once that was dry, I stenciled micro glaze through the Gothic stencil and sponged on watered-down Umber Fluid acrylic.

Once that was dry, I wiped off any residual micro glaze. I decided that the canvas needed some colour framing so I sponged on umber along the sides and edges and wiped some away as I went to keep with the distressed look.

Supplies: Canvas and metal letters (Dollarama), Tim Holtz Harlequin and Gothic Stencils (Stampers Anonymous), Vintage Distress Collage Medium, Distress Micro Glaze, Gold Alcohol ink Mixative (Ranger), Finnabair Emerald and Umber Fluid Acrylic (Prima), fleur de lyse ornament (RAZ imports)

While that was drying, I brushed on some Gold Mixative Alcohol ink onto parts of the metal letters so as to match the touches of gold on the fleur de lyse. Once all was dry, I adhered the fleur de lyse and metal letters to the canvas and called it done.

Here's another look at the completed canvas:

Texture Filled Tag

If you are like me, you have a stash of started projects. You know those ones that you start, then put aside as more pressing projects come along. Today's tag fits that bill. I had started it for one of Tim Holtz Tag challenges eons ago but hand not finished it. It was bagged up and put in a drawer with the background completed but it still needed all the embellishment details and words added. This week's Simon Says Stamp Monday - Add Some Texture challenge was the perfect time to dig it out and finish it off as it is chock full of various textures.

The burlap base was stenciled with texture paste and coloured with Distress Ink. Next, I adhered the torn piece of patterned paper with gel medium. While that was setting up, I stamped the compass rose onto tissue paper. Then, I collaged it onto the background and inked the edges with distress ink.

Next, I took the scanned and printed photo of a family member and added colour to it to add interest, corner punched the corners and inked the edges. It didn't quite pop enough off the background so backed it with white cardstock. The crinkle ribbon was coloured with Antique Linen spray stain and adhered to the tag prior to adding the diecut, distressed and rolled cardstock flowers and leaves. Then, I adhered a piece of pattern paper to the back of a plastic fragment piece ad fashioned a paperclip into the whole and onto the metal Treasure pin clipping it onto the ribbon. Lastly, I inked the edges of the word strips and adhered them along with the crown and the metal initials and tided off the paper ribbon at the top.

It has been a while since I crafted with my collection of Tim Holtz products, and it was fun to play with them. You can't go wrong when you are inspired by Tim. I really like how this turned out and think it would be fun to make more tags along this vintage vein featuring other family members. Be sure to check out the design team creations over at the Simon Says Stamp Monday -Add Some Texture challenge here.

Going Old School

Hi creative friends! Today, I made a tag to play along with Simon Says Stamp's Back to School Monday challenge and More Than Words Mini Challenge - Old.

I love old things! I love century homes, antiques and old school items, hence the old Canadian Speller that I used as a photo prop. It was a natural fit to dig into my Tim Holtz stash and gather a bunch of items that fit the bill.

Spray Stain, texture paste, Distress inking and distresssing, all age the newer pieces to match the aged image pieces from a variety of Tim Holtz ephemera packs. I used a circle cut from an old dictionary to create the reinforcer for my improvised tag made from the pocket card matted on a distress kraft backing. The "going old school" sentiment was created on my computer using a typewriter font and the crinkle ribbon was custom coloured with Antique Linen and Vintage Photo spray stains.

I had math, language arts and science covered but I hemmed and hawed about the addition of the fleur de lis (representing french language learning) charm. I was challenged with whether with it, it reduced the white space area and drew the eye. Here is the version with the charm.

With or without the charm... which do you like best?

Be sure to pop on over to the two blogs to see some wonderful inspiration from their designers as well as fellow entrants.

We Are Like Snowflakes

For this month's EC Anything Goes Dare, I was inspired by the crisp whites, cool blues, and shimmery tones of iridescent and silver sparkle that all come with a fresh snowfall creating a magical winter wonderland.

To begin, I stamped the Snowflake stamp using VersaMark numerous times across the bottom of my 4 3/4 x 6" white cardstock card base and then heat embossed with Silver Sparkle emboss powder creating a border.

Next, I stamped both Flakee and Elegant Flake multiple times with Unicorn Hero Arts Hues pigment ink and then heat embossed some with Iridescent Shimmer and some with Soft Fallen Snow on the 4x6 Wild Whispers card. I fussy cut out a snowflake from a 4x3" Wild Whisper card as well as cutting out and ticket corner punching the sentiment from another 4x3" Wild Whisper card in this collection.

Once all the components were prepared, I was ready to assemble by glueing down the stamp embossed card to the base, adhering the sentiment with foam tape and then using glue dots to mount the metal ring clipped Victorian Snowflake Charm and Mini Victorian Snowflake Charms. Beautiful shimmer, texture and dimension, this is a great multi-occasion seasonal card.
