Today is the second part of the Design Team reveal over on the Emerald Creek Dares challenge blog for the Splatter Some Fun challenge and I am sharing my splattered Inspire canvas.
I really do like using splatter on my creations so this was an easy one for me to incorporate. There is something very freeing about splattering. You have to let go and let it be. Not to mention that it is fun... well for me anyway. Having taught splattering techniques at various workshop classes, I know that it is a source of stress for some. The trick is to be relaxed and loose of hand and start with less cause you can always add more.
I started with a piece of Wild Whisper Designs mint chevron patterned paper and a Vaseline resist technique. I applied some lines of petroleum jelly prior to painting it with Black Dina Wakley Heavy Body Acrylic paint. Once it was dry, I rubbed it with a piece of paper towel and it removes the jelly and jellied paint allowing the patterned paper to show through. Next, I slightly heated it with an embossing gun to dissolve the jelly residue into the paper. Then, I ran and anti static (I use cornstarch in a cheesecloth wrap) over the piece. I stamped with the Kimilese script stamp using emboss ink and embossing it with Soft Fallen Snow embossing powder. This gives a nice effect against the black.
Up next came the splatter fun. After once again running an anti static over the piece, I spritzed water into my hand and then flicked it across the background paper. Next, I covered the paper with St. Paddy's Day Sparkle embossing powder and poured it off. The water droplets hold the emboss powder just long enough to heat set it with an embossing gun. Be careful to keep the heat tool moving and not overheat and scorch the acrylic paint. Once cooled off, I repeated the water spritz emboss technique with Lavender Sparkle embossing powder. Then, I dabbed emboss ink over a thin strip of cheesecloth and embossed it also with Lavender Sparkle emboss powder. Once it was cool, I cut it into two pieces and adhered them to the background piece. While it was drying I moved onto prepping the base.
The base is an upcycled piece of corrugated packing wrap that I gessoed. I splattered Lavender Sparkle embossing on this one using a small fan brush and dipped it into the Emboss It container. Since it is a thicker almost gel like liquid, I placed the loaded brush on my craft mat and spritzed it with a bit of water. I mixed the Emboss It with the water so that it was thin enough to achieve some splatter. I splattered the general area of where the black background piece would end on the opposite corners and then sprinkled and heat set the Lavender Sparkle emboss powder.
Once those pieces were all finished it was time to assemble the canvas. I adhered some cheese cloth that I had coloured with Cottage Ivy green and Teal Zeal blue Momento inks to coordinate with the patterned paper and emboss colours onto the base piece. Next, I glued down the patterned paper background piece and then the two old brushes. Taking some Tim Holtz white paper string, I wrapped it around my hand to shape it and adhered it to the brushes as the focal point and background to the canvas title.
I went with Inspire as my canvas title because not only does it make me happy to create art, it also makes me happy to share my art and inspire others. I recoloured, what was originally a baby blue metal dollar store find, by dabbing it with Emboss It and then heat embossed it with Hammered Metal emboss powder. Once it had cooled, I masked off the top half of the letters and then covered the bottom half again with Emboss It and then heat embossed the bottom portion with Hanukkah Embossing powder. Love the effect and how it now coordinates with the bottom colour of the rushes.
The last part was to add the Vintage Feather Charm and I did that with an upcycled piece of sock clipping metal (you know the small metal pieces that hold the end of a brand new pair of socks together).
