Crop & Create Vicki Boutin Shadow Box Class

A while back I shared some cards in this post here that I had made with the leftovers from Vicki Boutin's Technique Shadow Box Class at Crop & Create Markham.  I couldn't share the actual shadow box that I had made at that time, because it was a gift for my sister-in-law. Well her birthday has passed and I am free to let the cat out of the bag.

Loaded with Heidi Swapp, Pink Paislee, and Maya Road products, this was the result:

When I saw the class sneak peek photos, I  knew it was perfect for my sister-in-law.  Lucky for me, there was still space the day before the event and I was able to get in the class. 

It was a small class (about 10 of us) which made it all the more fun to sit around tables, craft, laugh, talk shop and get to know the other scrappers.  If you haven't had a chance to attend a class taught by Vicki, they are so fun.  I highly recommend it. Fast paced, fab product and you learn tons with beautiful results.

As you can see, I gave it my own little twist.  I pulled apart the layers on the cardstock layered sticker piece and inking them all as well as outlining the "sweet" lettering in black. I also added a multi font title to go with the sepia photos of my darling nieces and nephew that I had taken this year and overall, I played down and did not include as much yellow.

As we were working away on the frames in the class, I had mentioned that I thought it would look really cool framed in black. Well, I did just that.  I got an inexpensive canvas from the dollar store, painted it matte black and hot glue mounted the finished shadow box to it.  Love the way it pops against that black!

It was fun getting to make something that was not my usual style and totally with someone else's taste in mind. I am thinking that my sister-in-law must have loved it because she has it proudly on display in her living room.  Thanks Vicki for your wonderful talent!

Kreative Koncepts Colour Challenge #23

 

When I saw the Colour Challenge #23 at Kreative Koncepts (formerly ScrapFriends) I knew I wanted to play along.

Supplies: patterned papers (Heidi Swapp and Pink Paislee), stencil (The Crafter's Workshop), gesso (Golden), foam and chipboard letter (American Crafts), felt flourish (Queen and Company), butterflies (Recollections), twine and glitter (Dollarama), pen (CTMH)

Such pretty colours with the on-trend gold.  I paired them with a past sketch (March 2014 Week #2) from Let's Get Sketchy that I thought would work with my photo and what I had in mind for products and elements.

Crop and Create fun

I had a scraptastic scrappy weekend a few weeks ago after a new job assignment imposed break from creating. Spent two days at Scrapbook and Cards Today's Crop & Create Markham.  Loved, loved, loved it!

Loved catching up with familiar faces and friends.  Of course there is great shopping from The Memory Keeper and The Scrapping Turtle and Catherine ensures that there are plenty of other scrap goodies to buy at the registration table from the various workshop instructors.

I had fun and lots of laughs cropping with Lisa and Stacey, who I had met last year, and made many new friends this year as our table was larger.

I took Vicki Boutin's Shadow Box Techniques class and created a funky shadowbox for my sister-in-law's birthday. Her b-day is in April, so I can't show it here until then.

I can, however, show you the cards that I made with the left over Pink Paislee Heritage patterned paper scraps.

Inspired by some of the elements on the shadow box, I created this:

The bordered punch trim is actually washi tape.  That took a bit of time to figure out a technique to make it work so it looked like fabric trim.

It was adhered to the end of an 8.5 x 11 piece of paper, border punched and then inked in sections as I slowly removed it from the paper.  Then using two pointed instruments, I styled it do add dimension.  Lastly, I cue-tipped some corn starch onto the back of the raised segments so that they would not stick down in future if pressed upon.

The butterflies were stamped using one of my favourite Magenta stamps on vellum packaging liner and fussy cut.


Next up was this beauty:

The flower inspiration for this one came from Sheila's Petaloo Flower Sale Bin. When I saw these babies, an idea formed and I was off.  With the flowers and a specific card worthy friend in need of a pick-you-up in mind, this card came together really easily and quickly.

Lots of textures and dimension on this one.

Once that well of creativeness was sprung, I was raring to go and created two other layouts which I will share at another time.

A Single and a Double to Share

SNR's April edition saw me digging into my stash (yeah!) to create two of my assignment layouts.  First up is my Fun and Playful stylized take on a Carey Bridges' layout for what SNR terms a reverse sketch; where by the designer takes a layout and creates a stylized layout based on it.  For this one, I used Pink Paislee's House of Three's brightly coloured and fun Soiree Collection.

I love the pop the paper gives especially with the black or white backing in sections.

Next up is my take on a two page sketch by Lucy Chesna.  I played with this one going for a girlish grunge feel on this layout. I used gesso to alter the background papers prior to heat embossing the stars border and distressing and grunging the edges.

Apparently shinny is primarily a Canadian term.  It is an informal pick up game of hockey with no set number of players and does not require regulation equipment.

Other than using a larger series of three photos and stars in place of scallops, I stuck fairly close to the sketch as it suited my photos well.

Get Picky has done it again!

The ladies over at Get Picky have done it again with a gorgeous inspiration photo for their June Inspiration Challenge #9.  This time it was the movie poster for Sex in the City 2.  It offered such fabulous shimmery colours that I went with that feel in my layout.

Journaling reads: Squeezing out every last bit of a gorgeous day with an after dinner sunset swim.

I had a chance to use some Tim Holtz Distress inks on the Pink Paislee/House of 3 Parisian Anthology resist papers for this one.  Not to mention Glimmer mist and the sparkly trim from Webster's Pages.  To finish of the glam, I used 2 types of glitter title lettering and a glitter pen for journaling.  Another layout that pushes the playing with techniques envelope with fun results.

Family Time

Here in Ontario last Monday was Family Day. An actual statutory holiday devoted to spending time with your family.  In our often insane fast paced daily lives the simple pleasure of enjoying ones family can get lost.  When I saw Becky Fleck's PageMap Blog Challenge sketch for February, I knew the photo I wanted to document.  One I had taken earlier in the month at one of our Sunday dinners of my husband, his sister and his mom.  I love the special time spent with his family and the relationships developped both by and with myself but also amoungst the cousins.  It all goes to building a special bond and lifetime memories ...  Sunday dinner at Grandma's.

Family time...time well spent!

Get Picky #5

When I saw this new CTMH paper, I knew right away that I wanted to use it for the Get Picky Sketch #5 and I knew which photos that I wanted to scrap. The hard part was finding the photos.  I knew the photos were from when my DD was 1 or 2 and it took some searching through old printed photos.  Oh, those 35 mm days! It was neat to look at those photos from my prescrapbooking days. So much material to work with there.  It turns out they were from 2002.

I totally love how it turned out and I used up some old CTMH cardstock and sticker stash too.
