With a Flourish

Holiday time affords me some much needed crafting time. When I saw Canvas Corps December Crew challenge, it piqued my crafty interest. After rummaging through my stash, I came up with this flourishing ornament.

The thing that is great about good products is that they don't go out of style with age, especially so if they have a vintage appeal. The flourishes are from some 7 Gypsies ones that I have had for ages. I even used the inset pieces as the hanging teardrops. I sprayed the flourishes with Tattered Angels Peacock Chalkboard and the teardrops with Chalk Chalkboard mist. The teardrops were too stark white so I spritzed them with Pearl Glimmer Mist. That was better but not quite to the cream colour that I wanted so I single spritzed them with Wheatfields Glimmer Mist and they were perfect. Just the right cream with hints of bluish glitter tones.

Once the flourishes were dry, I stamped them with a 7 Gypsies script stamp from an old mini stamp set from 2012 using Coffee Archival ink. I glued the flourishes together and then used the jump rings to add the hanging teardrop pendants which I embellished with gold iridecent sequins filled with golden glass beads. I used gold thread to hang it.

What do you get when you mix a fun sketch with a recipe challenge?

For me, it resulted in this... 

This is both my DT take on LGS August Week 3 sketch and me taking a crack at Sassy Scrappers Recipe Challenge for August.

    

Watercolouring with mists... check. I had filled two mini misters with leftover diluted Magenta Hot Pink and Orange Nuance from a previous project and it was just the right colour for the MME My Girl collection embellis that I wanted to use. I sprayed them on a clear gessoed background. After stamping with the white ink, I decided it need a bit more watercolour feel so I repeatedly stamped with the watercolour after spritzing it on my craft mat and then loading my stamp from there. Not perfect impressions but that is totally okay for the look that I wanted.

I used the orange Nuance spray on the Maya Road canvas tags after I stencilled them with a mix of whipped spackle and clear gloss medium. Nothing like some creative chemistry in improvising when you want a certain effect but do not have the product. ;) After they were dry, I dabbed a bit of Dreamsicle Glimmer Mist as it was a different and darker orange to give some further details to the tags.

After I sewed three rounds of circles and arranged my other elements, including the title using Thickers (another check in the recipe), it was time for the last recipe item or rather items... enamel dots. I used both the MME My Girl collection ones and some Simple Stories DIY pink ones.

Capture a Rainbow

Hi Friends! It is a rainbow kinda day today as I am up on the Magenta blog with my Capture a Rainbow post sharing this mini 4x6 mixed media art journal zine. When I created the mini book it ended up being eight pages which was perfect for a title page and Roy G. Biv. I have to thank Lauren Hooper's Creative Captures Photo Prompts for the inspiration on this one. Lauren is part of the very talented duo (the other being Caylee) that is responsible for Get Messy Art Journaling... a fun, supportive, educational, inspirational art journaling community that I participate in.

I balanced solid colour pages with white backgrounds on the opposite pages. It is a small book of cheery colourful textural goodness. To learn more about its creation and to see page details, please head on over to the Magenta blog here. As always, comments are greatly appreciated. :)

Winging It

Hee, hee, hee... please pardon my punny title... I couldn't resist.  Yes, the  Creative Gym - Exercise #3 over at The Mixed Media Place this month is about things with wings.  I chose to created a mixed media watercoloured tag with a bird.

Supplies: watercolour paper (Canson), Tim Holtz Distress Inks and Paints, Archival Ink (Ranger), Tim Holts stamps and stencil (Stamper's Anonymous), prisma glitter (CTMH),  ribbon (misc.) Glimmer Mist (Tattered Angels), vellum, lace and metal charm (Dollarama), Ashland shell spring filler (Michaels), gel medium (Faber-Castell)

After stamping my initial bird, I stamped another using black Distress Paint on vellum, sprinkling it with prisma glitter, fussy cutting it and partially adhering it over top the original to create some dimensional effect.

For the background, I went with this week's Inky Background Challenge on the Simon Says Stamp Monday Challenge Blog and created it with multiple Tim Holtz Distress Ink colours applied to a stencil, water spritzed, and then transferred to the watercolour paper.

I coloured the ribbon with Distress inks to match and the lace with spray ink, and added the shells which are actually pre-coloured vase fillers that I repurposed. I picked through the bag to find small flat ones that would suit well providing texture without too much bulk.

I liked this tag so much, I will not be gifting it. It has found itself a home as a bookmark in my lastest edition of Flow Magazine.

Magenta December Challenge

Can you believe it is the last month of the year? With a new month comes a new Magenta challenge. My DT creation for this month's Noel themed challenge is a card featuring stamping, stencilling, watercolouring, and sparkles with glitter glue, bling, and glimmer mist.

Set the World on Fire

Did you see the gorgeous July Mood Board over at Sassy Scrappers? It was the perfect theme for my daughter's grad night selfie with one of her close pals.

Here is what the mood board looks like.

My interpretation is a literal take on it with the textures, fabric, glam and glitter. I even have triangles of sorts with the rays. Used my Silhouette Cameo to scan and cut the script title. Amazing what technology makes possible.

I wasn't sure that I wanted journaling on this one but thought to give it a try. 

Still not sure which way I like it best.

First Docs

These boots are made for walking (like that song too)... these are my daughter's kick butt patent leather boots.  She was so proud of her purchase. I shake my head and laugh at the patent leather part but smile at the Docs part. I do love Docs too and I love her evolving sense of style. I am calling this one my glam-grunge layout.  Nothing like using gold leaf and glitter with patent leather... LOL! Love it!
A whole lot of LESSology Challenge 38 (Sew Lovely) and Society 52 challenge 4 (No Patterned Paper) and a little bit of inspiration from Louise Nelson.  If you have not seen Louise's use of gold leafing and glitter, you really have to check out her work. Awe inspiring!

I upcycled the Dr. Martens packaging. Used both the inside and outside of the box plus the tissue protection wrapping and added the classic yellow stitching. I even used some really old letters from my stash. Remember Lil' Davis Designs. Definitely a case of getting more with less on this one. Love finding inspiration from fellow crafters and challenges. It all makes me smile.

Font Fun with Magenta

You got to love when a product immediately inspires you with a project idea.  That was the case when I saw these Magenta Peel Offs W letter sheet.  My idea came to fruition this month for my Magenta assignment.

Playing with the fonts and alliteration, I created this winter layout.  The journaling is tucked behind the photo and accessed by pulling up the card with the punched tab.

Here is a close up of the fussy cut and exacto knifed section.  I was going for a flowing snow drift effect where I glued down some lines but popped up others.  Also seen here is the painted and stickled chipboard snowflakes.

Always a first time for everything

It is funny how things work out.  I hadn't updated my galleries for September & October (where did the time go) and had some time on the weekend.  Totally a surprise to go visit Two Peas to do some wish list building tonight when I came across this on the main gallery page.

My first time, that I know of, being in the Top 3 and with 2 very different layouts.  I think that is soooo cool! Can you tell that I am just a little excited?

Try Something New

I love to try new techniques.  My motto is ... you won't know, unless you give it a go.  So when I saw this tie-dye technique from Becky Fleck, on the Scrapbook and Cards Today blog, it intrigued me and I wanted to give it a try.



Supplies: tissue wrapping paper (miscellaneous), glimmer mists (Tattered Angels), modge podge (Plaid), cardstock (Super Stock), chipboard letters, acrylic wings (Heidi Swapp), stamps (See D's, House of 3/Pink Paislee, 7 Gypsies, Making Memories, Melissa Frances), ink (Rangers), journal cards,tag and ink (CTMH), pen (Creative Memories), visitor admission lapel clip (National Gallery of Canada)

My paper of choice was a large sheet of white tissue wrapping paper.  I had a photo already in mind for this layout so I chose 2 different blues, a purple and a cream coloured Tattered Angels Glimmer mists.  I crumpled the tissue into a ball as instructed and sprayed it from lightest to darkest colour in a large box, rotating it as it expanded and the areas filled with colour.  I chose to spray 4 different tissue sheets so I could try it with different amounts of colour.  After I let the sheets sit for a while, I carefully uncrumpled them and then let them dry over night.

The next day, I chose the one that I felt best represented a sky with clouds and took a 12x12 heavier cardstock sheet and Modge Podged the page and adhered the tissue using a brayer to smooth it out.  I let it dry , trimmed the edges to within an inch and then turned the layout over and adhered the tissue edges onto the back; thereby creating a very finished look to my now ready background paper.  After copious amounts of stamping and some embellishing, it was done.

I think it worked well in representing a sky.  I would give this technique a try again.  Next time I am thinking it will be with paper so I can make some pretty flowers like Becky's.

Jake's turn

I am fortunate to have a hugely supportive extended family on my husband’s side. They all know about my passion for photography and scrapbooking.  I often scrap into the wee hours when we are at the cottage all together.  The kids are genuinely excited to see what I have made in the morning.

Besides my daughter, you will often find my nephew and nieces as the stars of my pages and projects. We do a lot of family activities within each month and thus the cousins enjoy spending time together.  This gives me great opportunities to catch the goings on in photos. My Twilight Beauties layout featured my daughter and nieces.  When it was lucky enough to appear on the Scrapbooks and Cards Today blog my now teenage nephew, God bless him, even left a super sweet comment on the SCT site.  For today's post, I am sharing a layout that I made of him from his tween years.

Get Picky has done it again!

The ladies over at Get Picky have done it again with a gorgeous inspiration photo for their June Inspiration Challenge #9.  This time it was the movie poster for Sex in the City 2.  It offered such fabulous shimmery colours that I went with that feel in my layout.

I had a chance to use some Tim Holtz Distress inks on the Pink Paislee/House of 3 Parisian Anthology resist papers for this one.  Not to mention Glimmer mist and the sparkly trim from Webster's Pages.  To finish of the glam, I used 2 types of glitter title lettering and a glitter pen for journaling.  Another layout that pushes the playing with techniques envelope with fun results.

Get Picky Inspiration Challenge #5

  This Inspiration Challenge photo over at Get Picky is phenomenal.

Prima Pretties for January Colour Palette

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year! 

Today I am sharing a layout that has the honour of being my final layout for 2010 as I finished it on New Year's Eve.  The colour inspiration was from the Prima Picks December Color Challenge that I posted earlier this month.  Lots of fussy cutting and distressing involved.  It took a few hours for the glimmer mist to dry the other day as well as some ironing to get the cardstock relatively flat this time due to the amount of mist.  It was so worth it as the glimmer misting is stunning in real life with such vivid green colouring that matches the Prima patterned paper.
